Creepy guy is creepy.
Alright. Here goes. Mr. Creepy, So, you wonder why there are fewer and fewer women showing up at sessions, and those that do tend to leave the room when you enter or sidle closer to whoever they're nearest? It's because they feel like you're going to do something to them against their will. It's one thing to flirt with someone casually, it's understood. There's a few hot gamergirls (not an oxymoron) who show up and play well and are awesome and that's cool with everyone. But you just... none of us female gamers want you near us. At. All. You're at least three times our age and say things that are just... creepy. Nobody wants to hear about what you used to get paid to do to people, even if we are in to that sort of thing (and stop asking us if we are.). You stare too long, try to get girls alone with you in "scenes", and get too close in peoples "personal space" for comfort. Most of the male players don't pick up on it because well... they're male, but there are those that do and they're watching out for us because you're like that neighbor everyone knows is doing something of questionable consent with people but there's no evidence to it and nobody's talking because they're terrified they'll be next. And those that do talk do it quietly and to the new female players coming in. We're on to you Creepy. We're on to you.AND YOU'RE NOT EVEN A GOOD PLAYER. You keep getting killed or thrown out of the city for being a dumbass in character, complain about it or go on about how you could have helped fix things somehow. Mysteriously. You metagame horridly and try to get in on everyones little plots to one-up whoever (Which is fine if your character wants to be watched. And watched, and used as cannon fodder later for knowing too much and being in the way.) All of your characters are the same, and they're terrible. tl;dr: Creepy stalker-ish guy makes all the female gamers feel like he might try to rape them and is a horrible player. Another annoyance.
Dear co-GM, We had an arrangement where my character would choose to save yours from being run over by a truck. I never said my character would be happy about it. In case you haven't noticed, he's kind of a jerk. My character being in-character does not mean that you've screwed up. Please grow a backbone and some self-esteem and stop taking in-character actions personally. Sincerely, The GM Current Mood: okayCurrent Music: Fly With the Black Swan - Sonata Arctica |

Moment of utter adorableness this weekend: My niece, who discovered how to work my iTouch when she was two and half years old, decided she wanted to see what music I had on the iTouch and whether she liked any of it. Mostly the answer was 'no', because I don't have kid music loaded. But as I was playing a board game with her brother on the playroom floor, she suddenly chimed out: "Iron Man! You have Iron Man!" And started playing "Gulmira" at top volume. Kid was turning three that day. |

Home From Thing
We're back from Dorsai Thing where we had a good time despite the girls contracting a bit of a tummy bug on Saturday night. They're feeling much better now and the resulting mass of laundry is almost done. :) |

Doctor Who Season 5 Trailer kender42 (how you doin', man? Long time no see) leads us to the newest trailer for The Doctor: I'll admit that this one has me much more hopeful than I have been to this point. Part of it is that, after the hyper little performance dance Matt Smith did after regeneration in The End of Time, he finally slowed down a bit, just enough to at least look as if he understands that, no matter how goofy the Doctor may act, there's gotta be some damn gravitas there. I still do not like that the Doctor might use a gun. But they managed to get away with that in The End of Time as well, so we'll see. Thoughts? |

Back Home The Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth was a blast -- like a Disney resort, except an hour-and-a-half drive from Ann Arbor -- and oh! It was so wonderful to see so many dear friends at Dorsai Thing. The afternoon was filled with fun and hugs and conversation and costumes -- Moonwulf in the lederhosen was almost as impressive as his lovely wife Ann in the beergarden dress that accentuated her, ahem, more obvious charms, and the Suttons as the sneakiest kinds of monsters -- Dolores Umbridge and a George Wallace supporter -- were a hoot. The banquet was also excellent, and I had wa-a-ay too much buttered noodles. The chicken was quite tasty, but many of us agreed the real star of the evening was the beef brisket. The pork tenderloin wasn't too shabby, either. After that, Anne and I went to one of the five indoor pools for awhile -- the first time I've been in a pool in a long time -- and it was excellent until I got a little sick. Fortunately, that was mostly past by the time I went down to the filk, and I stayed for about an hour and a half. This morning, more pool, an excellent breakfast buffet, and then some time down in the arcades. We finally made our way back up to the Con Suite, and got a few farewell hugs before hitting the road. Before we left the area, we looped around the Birch Run outlet malls to see what they had. A lot. So, a very fun weekend. I hope yours was as good...? |

argh, stupid brain
No, this isn't a Wobbly Gryphon Syndrome post, it's (I'm fairly sure) purely psychological. Occasionally, my mind will suddenly fixate on something, so that I become intensely conscious of a particular body part or small injury or circumstance. For the past couple of days I have been... I'm not even really sure how to describe it. Preternaturally aware of my neck. Specifically, the patch of skin on the front of it, just under my chin, where my beard ends and my Adam's apple would be if I wasn't fat. It's not sore or itchy or anything like that, I'm just... unable to not notice it. It's driving me up the wall. Current Mood: annoyed |

Song: Jenny and Karen.
Jenny and Karen met in the first grade. There were crayons to share, there were games to be played, And they lived only six blocks apart In the same little town. Jenny and Karen were girls we've all known, With their pigtails and problems and plans of their own, And they swore they'd be friends all their lives, And they'd never back down. And Jenny told Karen she loved her, And their mothers said "Isn't that sweet?" And they ran through the summer like shadows Of the trees at the end of the street, And everyone called it a phase... "It'll pass," was an often-heard phrase... ( Jenny and Karen went to the same school... ) Current Mood: thoughtfulCurrent Music: The cats, catting around the house. Cattishly. |

Certain things are no longer a given . . .
Such as the ability, in the future, to write paper checks on your checking account, without a hefty fee. One of the things about living in Mid-Ohio is that it long has been known as a good test market. So when my medium-sized bank had a research firm ask me to take an online survey about checking account features, I went along with it. Apparently, my bank is testing the waters about discontinuing the ability to write paper checks on consumer checking accounts. Maybe I'm showing my age, when I say that my mind croggles, but limiting my spending to debit card transactions, online bill payments, and cash below the $20.00 bill limit stipulated by many merchants I deal with, is insufficient. And the idea of a $25/month fee for the "antiquated privilege" of writing a check to a new business contact that I don't want to enshrine yet in my list of monthly online creditors, is too much. Yeah, I know that may of my favorite authors have envisioned such futures, but I never thought they'd come true any time like this soon. OK, so here's the first song coming out of yesterday's post
Gather Yourselves Together A song based on Philip K. Dick’s novel titles copyright © 2010 by Blind Lemming Chiffon tune: original (kind of generic electric 60s rock) Do androids dream of electric sheep? I want to know the penultimate truth. The crack in space is so wide and deep, Now time’s out of joint, goin’ back to my youth There’s a time for George Stavros, way back when – Now, wait for last year, ‘cause it’s coming fast In the Martian time-slip the unteleported man Has a zap gun that sends the future to the past Yeah, it’s a counter-clock world with my simulacra But the eye in the sky looks out for me I’m the man who japed, I’m Timothy Archer, But I’m gonna win the solar lottery. In the world Jones made, I came down with ubik So I had to call Dr. Futurity That galactic pot-healer said I was real sick And that I should go see Dr. Bloodmoney. Well, Dr. Bloodmoney really dropped a bomb He said I was in a maze of death, But he used Vulcan’s hammer, and it made me calm: I’ll be a cosmic puppet until my last breath. I had all three stigmata of Palmer Eldritch Flow my tears, the policeman said. You’re the man whose teeth are all exactly alike, We can build you back, though you were almost dead. Then the bubble broke, I came down with VALIS, The crap artist confessed he tried to murder me. The man in the high castle had a deus irae, And he put me through a scanner, just a little darkly. I was someplace near Radio Free Albemuth, Puttering about, in a very small land, I think I was in Milton Lumky territory When Nick and the Glimmung took my hand. Yeah, Nick came along, with a couple of higs, Just like the pilgrim on the hill, And if not for our friends from Folix 8 Mary and the giant would be there still. Sometimes I hear voices from the street. I think the game players of Titan will be here soon. They’ve already taken over Ganymede, And they’re led by the clans of the Alphane moon. Humpty Dumpty’s still in Oakland, he’s transmigrating. And we’re afraid he might fall off that wall And that could start the divine invasion: Gather yourselves together for the free-for-all. |

ConChord/WesterCon
Hi! I'm Kate Evans, and I'm one of the concom for ConChord. We're combining forces with WesterCon this year to bring an expanded program of music and fun. So basically, you're getting Two, Two, Two Cons in One! Our Guest of Honor is Seanan McGuire, our Toastmaster is Paul Kwinn, and our InterFilk guest is the group Stone Dragon. So, you're probably asking yourself a) what on Earth does SHE want? and b) what on Earth does she want with ME? Bluntly, I want YOU. And you, and you, and you. We have some wonderful GOH's, but we'd also like to feature members of the filk community in our programming. So we're looking for folks who are planning on attending ConChord/WesterCon who would be interested in performing there in some capacity. We're also interested in any ideas that you may have programming-wise. We'll be preserving many of the ConChord traditions, but it never hurts to start new ones! Not to mention that we've got an extra day to fill with song! Our web site is here - www.conchord.org You can contact me at kate at agirlsworld dot com. Or you can just post a note here and let me know how to contact you. It's going to be a great party, and YOU ought to be there! Current Mood: cheerful |

What are the actual...
.... *current* provisions in the health bill? I've seen so many rants about different provisions, some of which sound like they come from different versions of the bill (e.g., some say you'll be forced to pay for health care even though you're broke, others say not, some say it's going to have a public option, other say no, etc.). Is there a clear up-to-date summary somewhere? |

Filk Writing Challenge
There are certain SF authors, films, TV series and comics that are filked constantly, and others, not so much. There are so many wonderful Bujold filks, I'm sure that one day I may actually read one of her books. There are plenty of Heroes and Browncoat filks. Quite a few Snoopy filks, it turns out. However, I have noticed few if any songs at all based on the following, all of which are of great interest to me, and please correct me if you know of any: Authors: Philip K. Dick, J.G. Ballard, Thomas Disch, Phyllis Eisenstein (you'd think Alaric the Minstrel would be a natural, but no), R.A. Lafferty, Harlan Ellison, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Films: Slaughterhouse-Five, The Bed-Sitting Room, A Boy and His Dog (I do know the one by my friend Harry Smothers aka Moss Bliss), any of the Philip K. Dick films. TV Series: The Prisoner, Man From UNCLE, Avengers, Addams Family (other than the theme song) I imagine a song about an Uncle Fester adventure, probably entitled "Shoot 'Em In the Back". Comics: Groo. There's a minstrel character in Groo, and it's such a natural for filk that I don't have any comprehension of why I've never heard a Groo song. I imagine a Tom Smith song about Groo and I'm laughing myself silly, but I don't think he's written one, unless I missed it somehow. It would have to have cheese dip in it, and frays. I would certainly like to write some filks about these myself, but I would also like to hear more, so I challenge all you filk writers out there: write a new song based on one of these, and let me know about it. |

J is for. . .
Juxtaposition. This has always been one of my favorite literary techniques. It's all about opposites. Some weird examples from my current life include: watching Scarecrow and Mrs King Season One on DVD--thanks Banshee--and following that up with Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Things have changed so much in TV in twenty years. I'm wickedly tempted to write a 24/Scarecrow crossover. S:B&S really is becoming more and more like a perverse version of Upstairs/Downstairs. **shakes head** It's an odd world, people! Current Mood: awake |

A mighty huntress
(developed from A mighty huntress is our cat...) [ttto Luther's Hymn, "Ein feste Burg is unser Gott / A mighty fortress is our God".] A mighty huntress is our cat Of mouses and of snackies. She boldly leaps into their lair And fiercely she attack-ies.
She drags the snack jar out, Its head gripped in her mouth. She beats it on the floor, Its entrails out to pour. With greed she feasts upon them. Except, that is, when she gets the lid but leaves the jar behind. She doesn't seem to notice until after the whack, whack there's nothing there to eat. To the left, she has killed two real mice since Wednesday night. Good for you, Ista! Current Music: that (in head) |
